Need help with a patch

Post by pedx1ng » 20 Jun 2008 18:07

I'm trying to make a simple pad, which will have movement in the background, provided by an oscillator going up and down octaves. I have a proof of concept here, just to get the octave jumps going:

http://shup.com/Shup/46770/octavatetest.FXP

It seems to work ok in mono mode, but if I set it to have some polyphony, and then play more than one note, it's a cacophonous mess.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any assistance.

Actually more like this:

But I'm not trying to copy it, but to give a different take. Before I can work on any of that though I have to get the... pulses/sequences/whatever you want to call it, working and preferably polyphonicaly.

ah ok
too easy :P and too vague a sound for me to bother making it
sorry :P

though, to keep it simple make a new instru
lfo panning (the stereo thingy), step sequencer for volume
or just step sequence all of it

lfo a peaked frequency using the custom filter master 2000 thingie

phaser can be used to make it a little more moving depending on what you need

the sound is a regular saw, not really high pitched

an alternative to the filter can be:
Osc 2 + ringmod

edit: or did you mean the actual pad in the bg?
not sure how to make it off the top of my head
but the normal "deal" with this is several oscilliators and heavy unison
filter attack on trigger :)
oldest trick in the book
as for the sound itself, i cant really hear how its composed :P
sounds like chorus

arp + polyphony is.. impossible, most of the time
it wont sound good, instead it will sound horrible, and not even in-between
just mix oscilliators with different frequencies like -1 0 and +1 oct
end of discussion :P
if karma-man decides to make a multiband pattern sequencer then that changes things...

I tried my basic idea in a different VST which also has a step sequencer, and it worked fine. I could hold down multiple notes and it played as I expected.

Kasper, can you take a look at my patch and let me know what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

it will work if you use a VERY limited notation, mostly octaves,
and frankly its just better if you use osc's with different octaves :P
then again, you have more control in the notation...
its true though that there should be a poly thing in pattern, just like in notepitch...

That's all I'm trying to do -- octaves. And my understanding from reading the manual, is that anything that precedes a Notepitch Controller should be polyphonic. Which is why I want clarification from Kasper.

I'm far from an expert but it seems to me that your idea of using different oscs at different octaves would be more difficult to manage, versus just having a step sequencer control one osc. But maybe I'm missing something...

This is a bug that I've now found and fixed.
(I've tested your patch and it is absolutely fine.)

The problem was that the snap option was not copied correctly to polyphonic channels. It will work in v1.02 without using snap, but that is not really useful in your case.

Fix will be in v1.03: Bugfix: Frequency snap was not working properly in polyphonic mode. Fixed.

Thanks for finding the bug and reporting it.

Wow, that was quick - thanks! Since I'm not a pro, I just assumed that I was doing something wrong. Kind of nice to know I had the basic idea right.

that didnt work. but studying your code, I see where you put a variable after each equal sign. Thank you for your help.
