How do I use cubases automation to control KarmaFX?

I don't know what's the proper way, here's how I do it (or try to do it)

I assign the knobs that I want to automate to different CCs, then I record on a separate track the CCs, if necessary I re-assign them and modify them in the editor. I do it in a separate track from the note input track, so that if I make some mistakes it's easier to delete and redo everything without losing much. It's a little time consuming but for the most it works. I'm sure you can also do it if you change the midi filter in midi options, letting the sysex message in and out, but I'm always afraid to do that. Also, I think you can change banks via midi, but I've never tried that.
